Cannes 2009: Why I love Cannes
The starlets, the stories, the champagne - and the movies. Is Cannes the best film festival in the world? Mais bien sur.

The movie moguls, photographers and revellers bottlenecked around the Palais des Festivals at Cannes are always far too busy to glance at, let alone study, the statue of the gowned man that stands near the waterfront. Henry Brougham, for that's his name, was a Scotsman who not only founded the influential Edinburgh Review journal, but was also one of the 19th century's most famous anti-slavery campaigners.
In 1835, turned back from cholera-stricken Nice where he had hoped to spend his winter vacation, he ended up at a small fishing village called Cannes. He fell in love with the place and returned throughout the next four decades, in the process making it a key destination for his friends and fellow aristocrats.
These days, when Cannes is seen as the acme of French glamour and style, it's hard to imagine that the world's most famous film festival might not exist were it not for a Brit, a former Lord High Chancellor at that.
But it also took the efforts of an Italian – Benito Mussolini, not normally noted as a cinephile – to make the Riviera so celebrated: throughout the Thirties he urged the organisers of the Venice Film Festival to treat their event as fascist propaganda so that other nations, duly repelled, started up their competitions.

(PRLEAP.COM) At this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the Wilhelm & Karl Maybach Foundation and the Sunflower Children Foundation will team up to host a celebrity poker night to raise money for their charitable projects. At 10:30 p.m. on May 17, 2009, the glamorous Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc (Cap d’Antibes) will open its doors to a who’s who of politics, film, business, fashion and sports. Host of the VIP table is the American actor, screenwriter and director Edward Norton, known for his roles in "Kingdom of Heaven", "The Illusionist" and "The Incredible Hulk" etc. In previous years, the Maybach Foundation has had the pleasure of welcoming Dennis Hopper, Quincy Jones, Kirk Douglas, and Naomi Campbell, among others. Edward Norton teams up with Producer Nathan Folks this year to create a successful charitable event similar to what they did last year in Cannes.
Founders and presidents Ulrich Schmid-Maybach and Helena Houdova and their teams hope to inspire as many of the 250 V.I.P. guests as possible to get involved and contribute to one of the Foundations’ many successful projects. At the same time, guests will be able to enjoy the unparalleled atmosphere of one of the most famous hotels on the Cote d’Azur and savor the breathtaking view from the cigar and liquor lounge on the waterfront terrace. The Foundations are honored to have as their co-host and emcee, the biggest winner in the history of poker, world champion Jamie Gold. In the last two years Gold’s charitable efforts have helped raise over $110 million, which lead to the media dubbing him "The Poker Philanthropist".
The lucky winner will not only earn a seat into the 2009 World Series of Poker, but also be flown out to fabulous Las Vegas and given hotel accommodations for the event. Leading up to the biggest poker event in the world the lucky winner will get private coaching from Jamie, as well as during the event, as they take their shot at $10 million and becoming the next world champion!
On the next day, May 18, at 12:30 p.m., the Maybach Foundation will return to the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc to hold its annual "Private Luncheon at Cannes". Numerous celebrities are expected to attend and celebrate with this year’s award winner, who will join the ranks of previous honorees Dennis Hopper and Quincy Jones. Producers Nathan Folks, Lane Carlson and Jutta Aldenhoff combined effort to make this the most successful charity event of the year.
If you are interested in attending the Celebrity Poker Night and/or the Foundation Luncheon – and experiencing the unique ambience of the Cote d’Azur yourself – you can receive accreditation from the Maybach Foundation and from the Sunflower Children Foundation. More information about the Foundation is available online atwww.maybach.org, www.sunflowerchildren.org or by contacting Dr. Thomas Breisach.
