We’ve waited an full calendar year, but the Met Gala has finally arrived the moment again. This year’s theme, Camp: Notes on Trend, is one for the books, but it also has even the most astute vogue freaks somewhat confused. Andrew Bolton, the curator of the Costume Institute, took inspiration from Susan Sontag’s Notes on “Camp” essay in which she discussed the meaning of the phrase by means of 58 in depth definitions, a single of which was the “really like of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.” If you did not very grasp the topic the very first (or fifth) time an individual attempted to make clear it to you, hopefully, that enjoyment fact will have you emotion a little superior about your self.
When I assume of camp, I imagine of something—a costume, shoe, earring, or headpiece—so extravagant, it walks the line of getting tacky but would not cross it. It is really exaggerated in each individual sense of the word—it’s avant-garde, it’s pop tradition, it is fabulous. This year’s co-chairs—Lady Gaga Alessandro Michelle, artistic director of Gucci Harry Kinds and Serena Williams—could not embody the correct aesthetic of the topic more, and we cannot wait to see what every will put on tomorrow on the pink carpet.
