Heartbreaking news occurred over the weekend during a local California food festival that claimed the lives of three innocent people, including a 6-year-old boy, when a gunman fired several shots into the crowd.
As reported by @CNN, aside from the three who were killed, another 12 people were injured during the unspeakable act. The gunman, who has since been identified, used an assault-style rifle when he fired into the crowd of attendees at the Gilroy Garlic Festival. Further reports state that once local police officers arrived at the scene, they shot and killed the suspect within one minute of the shooting—sadly three people had already been murdered by then.
Although the gunman is now dead, eyewitnesses reportedly have confirmed that another person was also involved. A manhunt is underway for this possible second suspect, however just how the second person was involved is currently unknown. Authorities believe the suspects cut through a fence near the creek with a tool to enter onto the event grounds in Gilroy, which is about 30 miles south of San Jose.
An eyewitness description of the since-deceased gunman stated that he was “white, about in his 30s, under 6 feet. He was wearing tactical gear, had a baseball cap on, sunglasses, and he had a semi-automatic rifle. He was dressed for what he was there to do.”
The most devastating causality of the shooting was 6-year-old Stephen Romero, who was attending the festival with his family when he was killed by the gunman.
Romero’s grandmother gave a brief statement to local media outlets expressing her hope for justice for her grandson:
“I just hope there is justice and they catch the last person or the other person and that there’s justice. I want justice for my grandson.”
At press time, police have no motive for the shooting, although there have been suggestions that it may not have been a random occurrence. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims.
Roommates, what are your thoughts on this?
