Regardless of whether you identify as a millennial, Gen Zer, or Gen Xer, odds are you grew up reading or watching either Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women or J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter. Today, the internet bequeathed us the perfect Venn diagram of pop culture ephemera with the release of the new Little Women trailer. The film, directed by Greta Gerwig, stars a remarkable ensemble cast of the web’s most-memed actors and actresses, including Emma Watson.
Aside from gasping aloud each time a favorite face appeared on screen (Saoirse! Meryl! Laura! Timothée!), yours truly pressed pause after doing a double-take of Emma Watson as Margaret “Meg” March, the beautiful eldest sister and ideal “little woman” of the time, as she descended the stairs in a pastel pink dress fit for a society ball.
Although Little Women and Harry Potter take place in two entirely different times and exist within completely separate fictional worlds, it is impossible to deny the parallels in this scene. While Meg March and Hermione Granger could not be less alike, they share the spotlight—and a penchant for pastel pink, complete with ribbon accessories—to the delight of both fandoms.
While these characters’ fates diverge sharply, Meg choosing to live an “ordinary” life, and Hermione well on her way to becoming the hero of the wizarding word (no offense, Harry), this costumed nod is, perhaps, a subtle wink between literary icons, and an invitation to embrace the power and beauty of a perfect pink dress.
Below, find more Meg March– and Hermione Granger–approved pink party dresses and accessories to wear the next time you find yourself descending a staircase to embark on a magical evening.
