Roommates, Jay-Z has just added another title to his resume! We know him as a rapper, businessman, and husband to #Beyonce, but Jay is now entering the cannabis business.

According to CNN, Jay is now the chief brand strategist for Caliva. The California based cannabis company grows, manufactures and sells a variety of cannabis branded products. The merchandise list includes everything from cannabis flowers, to edibles and topical lotions.

“Anything I do, I want to do correctly and at the highest level,” Jay says during a press conference. “With all the potential in the cannabis industry, Caliva’s expertise and ethos makes them the best partner for this endeavor.”

Jay will also be spearheading Caliva’s social justice initiatives. Caliva chief executive Dennis O’Malley tells CNN Jay will be involved in creating outreach programs. Programs are aimed at helping create more opportunities in the industry for people who have been affected by the War on Drugs.

“In this position, Mr. Carter will focus on and work to increase the economic participation of citizens returning from incarceration–many of who are not seeing the monetary benefits of legalization–through advocacy, job training and overall employee and workforce development,” company officials say in a statement.

Jay is not the only celebrity who has joined the growing cannabis industry. He joins Snoop Dogg, Whoopi Goldberg, Willie Nelson, and Martha Stewart who are all joining the business in recent years.

The cannabis industry is growing rapidly, and investing in it is a smart business move. The investment, however, does spark controversy.

Many people of color have served and are currently serving prison time for the use or sale of marijuana. Meanwhile, the industry is growing and monetizing rapidly. Many are concerned about the effects this may have on those serving time.

Caliva’s CEO believes Caliva’s addition of Jay-Z is a step in the right direction.

“We think this is a sea change in terms of visibility to the industry,” he says. “We take this partnership with a lot of responsibility, a lot of humility, a lot of accountability moving forward.”
