Well, the A$AP Rocky legal saga just got a lot more complicated. Despite A$AP still being detained by Swedish authorities, it has now been confirmed that the man he accused of initially assaulting him will not be charged by prosecutors of any crime.
According to @THR, A$AP is still attempting to be freed by Swedish authorities to due assault charges—but the man he says incited the incident is fully cleared. Prosecutors made the decision after watching the video footage from the incident and decided that the man in question acted in self-defense when he hit one of A$AP’s bodyguards with his headphones.
Additionally, A$AP is still under investigation, as Swedish prosecutors are expected to determine his fate this week—either deciding to formally charge him with assault or release him back to the United States.
A$AP’s legal outcome could depend on Sweden’s interpretation of self-defense, which differs greatly from the legal interpretation in the United States. Under Chapter 24 of the Swedish criminal code, it is lawful to intervene to prevent an “initiated or imminent criminal attack on person or property” but using excessive force, even in self-defense, can be a criminal offense.
Donald Trump stated last week that he was in touch with Sweden’s Prime Minister in the hopes of getting A$AP released. Several celebrities have also championed his release, including Kanye West and wife Kim Kardashian.
The office of the Swedish Prime Minister had this to say about the talks with Trump:
“The Swedish Prime Minister had a friendly and respectful conversation with Trump, lasting around 20 minutes, in which he underlined that in Sweden everyone is equal before the law and that the government cannot and will not attempt to influence the legal proceedings.”
A$AP Rocky has been detained by Swedish authorities since July 2nd.
Roommates, what do you think about this latest development in A$AP Rocky’s case?
