Welp, here we go again. Another beloved black movie classic is now being added to the ever-growing list of remakes, reboots…and now prequels. Denzel Washington earned his second Academy Award for his portrayal of Alonzo Harris in the 2001 film “Training Day”—and now that film is reportedly getting the prequel treatment.

We are currently in the era where original ideas are rapidly becoming a thing of the past, as far as the movie/TV industry is concerned. @Deadline reports that arguably one of Denzel Washington’s best and most memorable roles is set to have a prequel surrounding his character—although Denzel will have no involvement with this new take on “Training Day.”

The as-yet-untitled film is set to take place a decade before the 2001 original film, specifically around the time of the L.A. Riots that occurred after the infamous Rodney King verdict in 1992. Antoine Fuqua, the director of the original film, will also not be apart of this prequel.

Hollywood newcomer Nick Yarborough will take over the writing duties of the film. It is rumored to show what young detective Alonzo Harris was doing during his early days as a police officer and may focus on who he was before he became corrupt, as well as aspects of his personal life.

You may remember that a short-lived TV series based on “Training Day” aired on CBS for one season before it was cancelled in early 2017. The series starred the late Bill Paxton and newcomer Justin Cornwell. However, that series was set 15 years after the movie and featured all new characters.

Roommates, what are your thoughts on this?
